Being a writer and an avid Sex and the City fan, I can’t help but be inspired by everything that is Carrie Bradshaw. The fashion, the wisdom, the apartment and of course, the writing. Recently the iconic series celebrated the twenty year anniversary of the first episode. Naturally, I went on a SATC bender (including both movies)…

and I couldn’t help but wonder…

How is everything Carrie felt about relationships still the exact same two decades later? Have we, as human-beings, really not progressed at all when it comes to love and relationships? Shouldn’t technology be helping us do better? *sense my sarcasm on this one, please”

I collected some of Carrie Bradshaw’s most relatable and iconic, for that matter, wondering moments so that we can all sit around and laugh (cry) about our love lives and how we as humans have not progressed over the past two decades together… we’re on the buddy system now.

1. S1:E7 The Monogomyst

“Is it that men have an innate aversion to monogamy, or is it more than that? I wondered, In a city like New York, with its infinite possibilities, has monogamy become too much to expect?”

Do I even need to elaborate? No, I don’t think so.

2. S1:E9 The Turtle and the Hare

“Samantha left with the Turtle, Brooke left with a better gift … and I left wondering if everyone in Manhattan was settling.”

Raise your hand if you’ve sat back and remained single while 75% of the people around you settle. Now don’t get me wrong, genuinely in love couples do exist and I see them everyday… but I also see ones that make me question the validity of “soul mates” more than I already do.

3. S1:E10 The Baby Shower

“As I watched Laney tear open a terry cloth baby bib … with the same enthusiasm she once reserved … for tearing off rock stars’ pants … I couldn’t help but wonder … Was I next?”

Do you find yourself scrolling through Facebook wondering if this is a new epidemic? “Like congratulations, I’m so happy for you, but… Is it contagious? Should I be worried?”

4. S2:E4 They Don’t Shoot Single People, Do they?

“As I walked home, I couldn’t help but wonder … When did being alone become the modern-day equivalent of being a leper?”

“I remember when being the third wheel was fun!” – said no one ever
“I love when your best girl friend tags along on all our outings” – said no on ever… again Find a boyfriend or “you can’t sit with us”.

5. S2:E17 Twenty-Something Girls vs. Thirty-Something Women

“That week, back in the city, I wondered, What was the allure of the twenties?”

You pay bills, beer makes you sick for three days after and everyone sucks. Why did I ever wish to be a twenty-something “adult”?

6. S2:E18 Ex and the City

“I couldn’t help but wonder … Can you be friends with an ex?”

Let me answer this real quick… NOOOOO. When he texts you and he “wants to be friends” it’s actually code for “lemme hit that again, shawty”. Don’t fall into that trap.

7. S3:E13 Escape from New York

“I couldn’t help but wonder, No matter how far you travel or how much you run from it, can you ever really escape your past?”

Is wanderlust code for “I’m running from my problems”? Probably, but who are we to judge…

8. S4:E4 What’s Sex Got to Do With It?

“So there you have it. We’ve got a relationship without sex and sex without a relationship. Which had a better shot at survival? I couldn’t help wonder: What comes first, the chicken or the sex?”

It took me until this year, after watching this episode probably 3000 times to see what this question actually means…
When is it “okay” to sleep together? If we sleep together too soon, is it just going to be that? What if I start dating him and we don’t mesh in bed?… So ladies, I ask you… What comes first, the chicken or the sex?

9. S4:E6 Baby, Talk Is Cheap

“I couldn’t help but wonder what it meant that I wanted to talk to my ex-boyfriend again?”

We’ve all been there… Your new man just isn’t HIM and you HAVE to talk to HIM ASAP.

10. S4:E10 Belles of the Balls

“In view of current circumstances, I couldn’t help but wonder: Are men just women with balls?”

L O L. You would think this still wouldn’t be the case, but it is. Proving men are by nature, just women with balls.

11. S4:E14 All That Glitters…

“Although, at what point do separate interests become separate bedrooms? I couldn’t help but wonder: To be in a couple, do you have to put your single self on a shelf?”

You meet a guy and he’s awesome. All of a sudden a few months into a relationship that you’re not even certain how you ended up in, you wake up, but you’re not yourself. Tell me that hasn’t happened to you at least once… Are single you and relationship you two different people? Is it because they have to be?

12. S4:E15 Change of a Dress

“Because at the end of yet another failed relationship, when all you have are war wounds and self-doubt, you have to wonder, What’s it all worth?”

If at first you don’t succeed, try 32984 more times until you find the one with little to no return on time (or money) invested. Dating is so fun, I can’t even…

13. S6:E12 One

“I couldn’t help but wonder: When will waiting for the one be done?”

If anyone knows the answer to this question, lmk.. okay?

Let me know which of these 15 is your favorite to laugh/cry about in the comments! …and I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Carrie Bradshaw quotes ever,

“Maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed. Maybe they need to run free, until they find someone just as wild to run with.”

xo,
Ash

By the way… this one is for you, Lain
